To geek out a bit more here, this is the acoustic absorption in the ceiling. In the most basic explanation it’s designed to let sound in but not let it back out again. Swimming pools are a bitch the treat because of the huge acoustically reflective surface of the water, which is why pools sound the way they do and intelligibility is so poor. Adding a few hundred thousand human bodies helps with the absorption too. Live ones are fine.
